Volgens de meeste bronnen zijn er maar een paar momenten geweest dat Kennedy en Monroe elkaar zouden hebben kunnen ontmoet.
Gerucht
Het hoogtepunt: op 19 mei 1962 tijdens een geldinzameling en vroege verjaardagsviering voor President John F. Kennedy, ‘’shimmiede’’ Marilyn Monroe het Madison Square Garden podium op, schudde haar glamoreuze bontjas af om vervolgens in haar sexy outfit op te treden.
“Happy Birthday, Mr. President,” zong ze op haar typisch zwoele manier “Happy Birthday to you.” Als het publiek toen al niet geloofde dat Hollywoods’ sekssymbool en hoofd van het Amerikaanse leger geheime geliefden waren dan zou deze sexy performance van Monroe hen wel het onderwerp maken van intense speculatie voor de komende decennia, zeker omdat Marilyn maar twee maanden later zou overlijden. Het leidde tot nietsontziende artikelen in de roddelbladen, vol met leugens en vervalste foto’s met hen twee erop.
Toen JFK na haar optreden het podium opkwam om haar te bedanken, zei hij: “I can now retire from politics after having had Happy Birthday sung to me in such a sweet, wholesome way.”
Interessant om te vermelden is dat de ster voordat ze ging zingen, werd aangekondigd als de late-Marilyn Monroe vanwege haar geregelde te late aankomsten op de filmsets. Maar achteraf gezien zou je het als een voorbode kunnen zien. Minder dan drie maanden later, op 5 augustus 1962 werd Marilyn dood gevonden door een overdosis in haar woning in LA. Ze was 36 jaar. Hoewel samenzweringstheorieën blijven volharden, sommigen zeggen dat de Kennedy’s ermee te maken hadden en dat het een cover up was, is haar dood alom aangenomen als zelfmoord ofwel per ongeluk.
