The Story Behind 🎥

Every good friend was once a stranger.

”I don’t understand
We could have been friends”- Louder

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

Louder is inspired by romanticized history, written from the perspective of the Native Americans. Watching people from the West arrive, they were suspicious but benevolent, not knowing their territory would be confiscated and they would be put into slavery in the eternal search for power. There was nothing else to do but to fight back: ”Let us get louder”

What really happened ages ago, who was the good and who the bad guy (if you can speak of good and bad), that’s not up to me to say. I’ll leave that to the experts. The pattern you see through the centuries, and what has lead to writing this song, is that there has always been a group of people in search for power through bullying a minority. Steven Spielberg’s ”Why We Hate” is a documentary series that tries to define that. But I will never understand.” – Catalijne

A small glimpse of history

In an era in which the international slave trade was starting to grow, Columbus and his men enslaved many native inhabitants of the West Indies and subjected them to extreme violence and brutality. On his famous first voyage in 1492, Columbus landed on an unknown Caribbean island after an arduous three-month journey.

On his first day in the New World, he ordered six of the natives to be seized, writing in his journal that he believed they would be good servants. Throughout his years in the New World, Columbus enacted policies of forced labor in which natives were put to work for the sake of profits. Later, Columbus sent thousands of peaceful Taino “Indians” from the island of Hispaniola to Spain to be sold. Many died en route.

Fun Fact

The ”Table drum” you hear in the song (the repetitive rythm) was The breakthrough for producer David van Dorsten, co-producer Jos Kamps and me to produce this LP together. When I think of that exact moment I get goose bumbs all over and tears shed into my eyes.  We’ve been through so much together creating this LP. Is was an adventurious journey and I, we, hope from the bottom of our hearts, you, the audience, will enjoy.

The Making Of

Lyrics

White horizon
Approaching in full sight
To fear is to die
Shaking hands pale as light
Believe and trust
Our worries far away
In return overruled by their game

Kindness is overrated
Stripes are being repainted
Louder Louder Louder

Let us get louder
Make them wanna bow
I don’t understand
We could have been friends
No need to tear apart

Got to get tougher
Make the heart a little stronger
If living together is ripping you apart
Then we’d better start

I am wandering round

Deep down inside
Is a monster on the loose
Broken strings of love
No more goodness to choose
The harder you fall
The more it will bleed
Inevitable fight of the greedy

Kindness is overrated
Stripes are being repainted
Louder Louder Louder

Let us get louder
Make them wanna bow
I don’t understand
We could have been friends
No need to tear apart

Got to get tougher
Make the heart a little stronger
If living together is ripping you apart
Then we’d better start

I am wandering round

Let us get louder
Make them wanna bow
I don’t understand
We could have been friends
No need to tear apart

Got to get tougher
Make the heart a little stronger
If living together is ripping you apart
Then we’d better start
